Fairy Meadows, (locally known as Joot), stands as one of the most breathtaking destinations in a country overflowing with scenic spots!
The area is renowned for the ‘Fairy Meadows Road,’ which, at one point, was considered the second deadliest road in the world. A ride along this route is an adventure in itself!
Best Time to Visit Fairy Meadows
The best time to visit Fairy Meadows, is during the summer months when the weather is much more pleasant. A visit during the end of October or early November, as experienced by some travelers, can be quite challenging due to the cold.
The extreme temperatures can leave visitors huddled around a fire, trying to stay warm and make the most of the visit. Therefore, summer offers a more enjoyable and comfortable experience for exploring this natural paradise.
The Journey to Fairy Meadows
Reaching Raikot Bridge
The journey to Fairy Meadows begins at Raikot Bridge, situated on the Karakoram Highway, which acts as the starting point for any trip to the Meadows.
Travelers heading to Raikot Bridge via public transport can catch a bus from either Chilas or Gilgit, both of which are around two hours away. Alternatively, taxis are available, and flights from Islamabad to Gilgit on International Airways (PIA) are available, though cancellations are not uncommon. It is important to note that no direct flights are available from Islamabad to Chilas.
From Raikot Bridge to Tattu (Tato) via Fairy Meadows Road
Upon reaching Raikot Bridge, a jeep and a local driver are needed to continue the journey along the Fairy Meadows road, taking travelers to the village of Tattu. The Fairy Meadows road was once ranked as the second most dangerous road in the world.
Due to local control over the route, only a select number of drivers are allowed to operate along this path. The cost of hiring a jeep is approximately 8,500 PKR, which can be shared by up to five people.
For those with a fear of heights, this road may not be the most suitable. Though riding in a jeep provides some safety, the journey along narrow paths with steep drops and no guardrails can be nerve-wracking. For some, keeping their eyes closed for the majority of the two-hour trip is a way to cope, while others may thoroughly enjoy the exhilarating ride, accompanied by loud music along the way.
Hiking from Tattu to Fairy Meadows
Upon arriving in Tattu, the hike to Fairy Meadows begins. This part of the journey is no easy feat, as the path is long and steep. Even those accustomed to trekking may find the climb challenging, especially given the freezing temperatures. Rent for a horse to ease the trek is about 2,000 PKR (roughly €10), which makes the journey more comfortable.
As the path becomes icy during late October, the concern that the horse may slip is valid. However, the guide who accompanies the trek proves skilled at avoiding the frozen patches, making the journey safer and more enjoyable for the traveler.
Things to Do in Fairy Meadows
Fairy Meadows offer breathtaking views of Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain in the world and the second-highest. These views alone make the trip worth it. However, the experience is best enjoyed in the summer months. During colder seasons, such as the time of visit, it can be too chilly to do much other than gather around the fire until dinner is served inside one of the cabins.
Some adventurous souls may choose to trek from Fairy Meadows to the base camp of Nanga Parbat and return, a journey that takes most of the day. However, such an endeavor is better suited to warmer weather and was not part of the plan for this trip.
Departure from Fairy Meadows
After a filling breakfast, the journey back down the icy trail begins, this time without the horse. The descent proves much more enjoyable on foot, and travelers find the trek down more comfortable than expected. If there are plans to return via horse, it is essential to inform the guide the evening before, so the horse is available for the ride down.
Upon completing the trek, the jeep ride back to Raikot Bridge is once again an exciting experience, offering views of the now warmer surroundings. From Raikot Bridge, the next phase of the trip continues, making the journey to Fairy Meadows just one of many unforgettable experiences.
