Soroca is a small city located in the northern part of Moldova. Though it is somewhat distant from Chisinau, the capital, the roads are fairly good (at least by local standards), and visitors can explore the main attractions in a relatively short time.
A visit on a scorching afternoon allowed for exploration of Soroca Fortress, the Candle Monument, and the unique “Gypsy” Hill.
The Soroca Fortress is a medieval defensive structure originally built in wood in 1499 and later reconstructed in stone in 1543. The fortress was ordered by Stefan cel Mare, a ruler known for his significant contributions to the region's history. Designed in a circular shape with five equally spaced bastions, the fortress was built according to the principle of harmony, often referred to as “the golden section.” This design makes it a distinctive example of medieval fortifications in Europe. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the Nistru River while walking around the fortress.
Next, the journey took them through “Gypsy” Hill, a street where the Roma community of Soroca has built impressive, ornate homes. Many of these houses are inspired by well-known architecture from across the globe, including replicas of the United States Capitol Building. While some of the homes remain unfinished, the architecture is both intriguing and unique.
The final stop was the Candle Monument. Although it was said that the monument could be reached by climbing 600 steps, the visitor had mistakenly assumed the steps led to the top of the monument. Upon reflection, this did not make much sense, as such a tall structure would have made that impractical. Using Google Maps led to narrow, less-traveled roads, but the stairs, which start at the Nistru River, lead up to the monument itself.
The monument, inaugurated in 2004, was created to commemorate the cultural monuments that once stood in Moldova but were destroyed over the years, particularly during the 20th century. The views from the monument offer a stunning perspective of the Nistru River.
