Hey Lykkers! 🧺🍎🥬
Have you ever opened your fridge to grab some veggies… and they're soggy or moldy way too soon? Yeah, same here. For the longest time, I didn't realize I was making one simple mistake: storing certain fruits and veggies together. 🤯
So today, I'm spilling the fridge tea on which veggies you should definitely keep far away from fruits!
Let's make your groceries last longer, shall we? 🥰
What's the Problem?
It all comes down to a sneaky gas called ethylene 🍌💨. Some fruits (especially when ripening) naturally release this gas, which speeds up aging. That's great for softening bananas—but not so great if you're storing them next to sensitive veggies. These veggies absorb the gas and spoil much faster. 🙅♀️
Here are the top veggies to keep separate from fruits!
1. Leafy Greens (Spinach, Lettuce, Kale) 🥬
These are super sensitive! I've noticed my spinach wilts in just a couple of days if it's near apples or bananas. Ethylene makes leafy greens lose their crispness fast, and no one wants a mushy salad. Keep these in a sealed container far from fruity zones.
2. Broccoli & Cauliflower 🥦
These guys are strong and sturdy, but surprisingly ethylene-sensitive. I once kept broccoli next to some peaches and it yellowed and softened within two days! Store them in the crisper drawer in a separate bag to slow things down.
3. Carrots 🥕
Fun fact: ethylene turns carrots bitter. I didn't believe it until I tasted it myself—yuck. They lose both texture and flavor if stored near apples or melons. I keep my carrots in a veggie bag, sealed and away from any fruit drama. 😅
4. Cucumbers 🥒
Cucumbers seem chill, right? But they don't like company. Just a few days next to tomatoes or apples and they go soft and slimy. I now wrap mine in paper towels and store them in their own cool little corner.
5. Potatoes 🥔
Okay, not technically a fridge veggie, but here's a big tip: never store potatoes near fruits like apples or bananas on the counter. They'll sprout and go soft much faster. I learned that the hard way after an entire bag of potatoes turned into a science experiment. 😂
Quick Tip Recap 📝
Fruits that release lots of ethylene: apples, bananas, pears, peaches, avocados, tomatoes.
Veggies that are sensitive to ethylene: leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes.
Just give each group their own space, and your fridge will stay fresher, longer. 🙌
