I've been lucky enough to chase the Northern Lights in Iceland, and trust me, it was an experience I'll never forget! But here's the thing — it's not as easy as just packing your bags and waiting for the aurora to show up.
After all, the lights can be a little elusive. So, I'm sharing my top tips to make sure you don't make the same mistakes I did and get the most out of your Northern Lights adventure!
✅ Best Time to Go: Know When to Visit
When I went, I made sure to plan my trip between late September and early April. That's when the Northern Lights are at their best. I went in January, and let me tell you, the long dark nights gave me a real chance to catch the show! But don't just rely on the dates — weather is key. You need clear skies to actually see the lights, so check the weather forecast and be prepared to be flexible with your timing.
❌ Don't Just Book Any Tour
I made this mistake too — booking a random tour without checking the reviews. Big mistake! Some tours end up being crowded and not really well-planned, which ruins the magic of the moment. Do your homework before booking. Look for tours with experienced guides who know the perfect spots away from the crowds. Trust me, it's worth it to spend a little extra for the right experience.
✅ Location Matters: Stay Away from Light Pollution
I stayed in Reykjavik at first, but quickly realized it wasn't the best spot for seeing the aurora. The city lights totally messed with the view! So, I rented a car and drove a bit farther out to quieter places like Thingvellir National Park. That's where the magic happened — away from the distractions of streetlights. If you're serious about chasing the Northern Lights, get out of the city!
❌ Don't Forget to Dress Properly
Okay, I thought I was prepared for the cold, but Iceland had me shivering! It's super important to layer up — I wore thermal leggings and a thick coat, but I also made sure to have waterproof boots and gloves. You'll be standing around for hours in freezing temps, and trust me, you'll want to be as warm and comfy as possible while waiting for the lights to appear.
✅ Be Patient & Flexible
Here's the thing about the Northern Lights — they're not always predictable! I spent hours out in the cold, hoping for the best, but some nights the sky didn't cooperate. It can be frustrating, but it's all part of the experience. On the nights I did catch the lights, it was SO worth the wait. Just stay patient, flexible, and enjoy the process!
