Recently, I've seen too many people being inconsiderate when riding in someone else's car, which frustrates the driver.
As someone with 18 years in the automotive community, I must share some important dos and don'ts for being a passenger.
Don't Criticize the Car
One of the most common complaints I receive is about passengers criticizing the car. Some people feel the need to comment, "This brand is not good," or "Why didn't you buy a different car?" Remember, the owner chose the car for their own reasons, whether it's personal preference or value for money. It's like someone saying your phone is outdated when you're happy with it.
No Smoking in the Car
This is a big one! Some smokers light up as soon as they get in the car without asking if it's okay. Smoke can seep into the seats and interior, and it's nearly impossible to clean out. I know someone whose white seats turned yellow from smoke, and no amount of cleaning could restore them.
Respect the Car's Privacy
Think of the car as the owner's mobile home. The glove compartment and storage compartments might hold personal items. It's rude to rummage through them. I've seen cases where someone accidentally discovered a surprise gift for the owner's spouse, ruining the surprise and causing embarrassment.
Follow Seating Etiquette
Don't automatically head for the front passenger seat. Ask the driver where you should sit. The front seat is usually reserved for close friends or family. The right rear seat is considered the most prestigious. Sitting there without asking can come across as disrespectful.
Close the Door Gently
I've seen people slam the car door shut, which can damage the door's locking mechanism, affect the seals, and even warp the door. Modern cars have systems that allow the door to close automatically with a gentle push. Treat the car door with care, just as you would your own furniture.
Don't Backseat Drive
Everyone has their own driving style. Constantly telling the driver to "slow down" or "change lanes here" can be annoying. Unless there's a clear danger, it's best to stay quiet and enjoy the ride. Driving can be stressful, and the driver doesn't need a running commentary from the passenger.
Riding in someone's car can be a great way to bond with friends, but if you keep making these mistakes, even the best friendships can suffer. No one wants their beloved car to be disrespected.
