Why Astronomy Matters?

Astronomy is one of the oldest branches of exact science.

This field has been known to humanity since the time of Ancient Egypt.

It studies celestial bodies, including their shapes, definitions, and other phenomena outside Earth's atmosphere, such as supernova explosions, gamma-ray bursts, cosmic microwave background radiation, and more.

To study celestial bodies and the phenomena of the universe, you must understand its supporting sciences, such as physics, chemistry, biology, and the evolution of these objects. It may seem complex and confusing, right?

However, the enthusiasm of Indonesians to learn this science has been increasing in recent years. Ironically, despite the growing interest, there is only one formal educational institution for astronomy in Indonesia, which is at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

So, have you as a parent started teaching your child a bit about astronomy? There's no harm in introducing astronomy to children, as there are many benefits to teaching astronomy to kids, especially in enhancing their intelligence!

1. Children Will Be Interested in Learning Science

The phenomena of the universe are both amazing and confusing. When a child begins studying astronomy, they will surely have many questions. For instance, is there life in outer space? How was the Earth created? Where does the universe end? This is where astronomy will spark a child's curiosity. To find out the answers, they will be guided to study other supporting sciences like geology, physics, mathematics, and biology.

Who knows, by channeling this interest, they may become a researcher in the future or achieve great things and win various national and international student science olympiads. As a parent, you would surely be proud if your child reaches such milestones.

2. Children Will Learn Mythology

Behind every star constellation, there's usually a story. All ancient cultures sought clues for their activities, such as sailing or farming. They used signs from the sky as markers to start their tasks. Furthermore, ancient people used the stars as a canvas for storytellers to pass down traditions, myths, and tales.

Studying classical astronomy gives children the opportunity to learn about the mythology of ancient cultures, thereby broadening their knowledge. Children will then connect what they have learned with the night skies they see.

3. It's Not Just About Theory, Children Will Also Practice

Studying astronomy can't be limited to just reading textbooks. Children must engage in direct observation by looking at the night sky. This is a great approach because children will be encouraged to learn through activities like camping, lighting a bonfire, and enjoying nature, which is fun and never boring. Learning this way is more effective than traditional study methods.

4. Keeps Children Away from Gadgets

While camping and observing the night sky, the view can only be fully appreciated if all light sources, including from gadgets, are turned off. In this way, all the star constellations will be much clearer. This helps children stay focused and avoid the negative effects of gadgets on their brain development.

So, why wait? Start introducing your child to the wonders of astronomy today and watch their curiosity and knowledge grow! It's an exciting journey that could spark a lifelong passion for science and exploration. Don't miss out on the opportunity to nurture your child's mind and creativity in a fun and engaging way!
