We've all been there—standing in the living room, staring at that bulky couch or massive wardrobe, and wondering how on earth we're going to move it without scratching the floor or hurting our backs.

Moving furniture is often the most frustrating part of moving house. But don't worry—we've gathered some super useful tips to help us move furniture smart, safe, and with less hassle. Let's do this together!

My Top 3 Tips to Declutter for a Move

Split up that big sofa

Most modern sofas are modular, which means we can take them apart! If we're dealing with a large couch, try separating the pieces first. The cushions and backrests—especially the soft or leather ones—should be wrapped in clean cloths or moving blankets to protect them. And if it's a leather sofa, wrap those leather sections carefully to avoid scratches or dents during the move.

Take apart beds, wardrobes, and desks

For furniture made of boards like beds, wardrobes, bookshelves, or desks, the best move is to take them apart before lifting. It's super helpful to look for the original assembly instructions or a diagram. That way, we (or the movers) can disassemble things in the right order, step by step. All those tiny screws, bolts, and handles? Put them in small zip bags, seal them tight, and tape them to the matching furniture piece. That makes reassembling later a breeze.

Don't forget the back panels

Furniture like wardrobes or bookshelves often have thin backboards, which can break easily if we're not careful during disassembly. When removing those, use a gentle hand. After taking them off, wrap them in old sheets, blankets, or bubble wrap to give them extra protection while moving.

Secure the drawers first

Got furniture with drawers? Take everything out first—don't move it with things still inside! Then, either tape the drawers shut (just don't use tape that leaves marks), or pull the drawers out completely and carry them separately. It keeps things safe and avoids any awkward shifting when we're lifting.

Wrap up anything with glass or mirrors

Dressers, coffee tables, or makeup vanities often have glass or mirrors attached. These are delicate and can break easily if we're not cautious. Wrap those parts tightly in bubble wrap or soft foam sheets. And here's a great tip: label those wrapped pieces clearly with a marker that says “Fragile” or “Glass”—so everyone knows to be extra careful.

Be careful with built-in furniture

Built-in pieces, like shelves or wardrobes fixed to the wall or ceiling, are usually sealed with glue or silicone. When removing them, we might need a tool to gently separate them without hurting the walls or the furniture. If we're not sure, asking a pro for help can save a lot of trouble—and repair costs!

Need a break from the mess?

If our new place isn't ready or we just want to protect expensive pieces during renovations, putting furniture in a temporary storage unit can be a real lifesaver. Look for places with good climate control and secure conditions. It helps keep furniture clean, dry, and safe until we're ready to move it in.
