The Castle of Methoni, one of the most iconic castle town examples in Greece, stands majestically on the southwestern edge of the Peloponnese.
Adjacent to it lies the fortified islet of Bourtzi, connected by a small arched bridge, adding to the allure of this historic site.
Historical Significance
Origins and Ancient References
Dear Lykkers! Built by the Venetians in 1209 A.D., Methoni was known in antiquity as Pedasus, celebrated for its abundant vineyards. Homer referred to it as one of the seven cities offered by Agamemnon to Achilles. Over time, it was known as Mothoni, according to Pausanias and Strabo, while Thucydides mentioned its loose fortification in the 5th century.
A Center of Power Struggles
The castle's strategic location and natural harbor made it a coveted asset for Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, each vying for control to further their financial and diplomatic interests. During the 1st Venetian Rule (13th to 15th century), the castle reached its zenith but fell into decline around 1828 as its inhabitants relocated outside its walls.
Architectural Marvels
Unique Fortification Design
Covering an area of 93,000 square meters, the castle is divided into two parts: the southern city area, surrounded by simple walls, and the northern fortified citadel. The castle is separated from the mainland by a ditch and accessed via a wooden bridge. Its central gate, with Corinthian capitals, is a standout feature of Venetian craftsmanship.
Structures Within the Walls
The castle hosts a variety of historical buildings, including:
The Church-of Metamorfosi of Sotiros (Venetian era).
Ottoman baths and ammunition rooms.
Ruins of Byzantine structures like Saint Sophia-Church.
The Column of Morosini, a granite pillar possibly topped by the Venetian lion.
Bourtzi: The Embattled Islet
Bourtzi, built post-1500, served as a fort, prison, lighthouse, and refuge. The two-story octagonal tower features battlements, a circular dome, and a cistern on the ground floor. A bridge connects it to the main castle, creating an atmospheric setting for visitors.
The Castle Today
Although in ruins, the Castle of Methoni remains a captivating site. Its silent, windswept walls evoke a sense of grandeur and history, drawing thousands of visitors each year to marvel at its timeless beauty and atmospheric charm.
