Hello Lykkers! If you're a fan of discovering new corners of Bangkok, you'll definitely want to check out Khlong San District, a place that seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern-day energy.

On a recent walking tour, the area revealed layers of culture, cuisine, and hidden treasures that are often overlooked.

A Hidden District Across the Bridge

Khlong San is tucked just across the Memorial Bridge from the iconic Rattanakosin Island, offering a whole different side of the city. The streets here tell a story of history and everyday life, with cobblestone-like paths lined by vibrant shophouses. As motorbikes and bicycles zip by, the laid-back atmosphere invites you to slow down and take in the details. Khlong San feels like a slice of authentic Bangkok, untouched by the bustling tourist crowds that can overwhelm other districts.

Serenity at the Guan Yu Shrine

One of the first stops on the walk was the Guan Yu Shrine, a striking red and gold structure that stands out among the surrounding buildings. This shrine honors Guan Yu, a legendary Chinese warrior revered for his loyalty and integrity. The air inside is peaceful, with intricate statues and carvings that tell the story of Guan Yu's life. It's a serene escape from the noise of the city, providing a perfect moment for reflection.

A Stroll by the River

After soaking in the peacefulness of the shrine, the walk led towards the Chao Phraya River. Along the way, old teakwood houses lined the path, offering a glimpse into the past. Once at the river, the view opens up to the River Park Condominium, an unmistakable skyline fixture in Bangkok. The riverwalk was peaceful, with only the occasional boat zooming by, creating a calm contrast to the usual chaos of the city.

Street Eats and Sweet Delights

As the walk continued, Tha Din Daeng Road welcomed visitors with its lively street food stalls and family-run eateries. The smell of freshly cooked khanom pia—a Thai-Chinese pastry with a crisp shell and sweet filling—wafted through the air, prompting a stop at Sopon Bakery. It was hard to resist grabbing a couple of these pastries, which turned out to be the perfect snack.

A short detour took us to an unmarked market, where the hustle and bustle of a wet market unfolded. Here, a hidden gem awaited—a small shop selling khanom mo kaeng, a traditional Thai egg custard. The flavors of the custard were rich and smooth, and the friendly shop owner made the experience even more memorable. It's the kind of place you'll have to discover on foot, as it's tucked away at the entrance of the market.

From the River to Icon Siam

Once the stomach was satisfied, it was time to head towards Icon Siam, one of Bangkok's most modern malls. While walking might seem like a good idea, especially when the sun beats down relentlessly, a motorbike taxi is a far better choice. These rides, which cost between 40 to 60 baht, are a quick and easy way to get from Tha Din Daeng Road to the mall. Tuk-tuks are also available, especially if you're traveling with friends.

Icon Siam offers high-end shopping and dining, a stark contrast to the street markets and humble shops of Khlong San. For a more formal dining experience, the 6th floor has a variety of restaurants, while the ground floor is home to Japanese eateries and Thai food stalls. It's a perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploration.

Wrapping Up the Adventure

After a visit to Icon Siam, there are plenty of options to continue your journey—whether it's hopping on a ferry to explore the Assumption Cathedral and Bangkok's Muslim Quarter, or catching the BTS Gold Line to venture further into the city. However, after a long day of wandering, the air-conditioned comfort of a condo might just be the best place to end the adventure.

Khlong San offers a unique perspective of Bangkok, one where tradition meets modernity, and where local life still thrives. It's an area that deserves more than a quick glance—it's a place that reveals its true essence when you take the time to slow down and explore.

Hope this journey through Khlong San sparks your curiosity! Until the next adventure!
